[diesel_mercedes] Road trip/ charging issues sorted

I just completed an 800 mile road trip to NoCal and back, though only averaged 23mpg, w/ AC and moving quickly.
I need to rebuild the injectors. I did get a nice Italian tuneup on the Grapevine and Old Priest grade, as there was no one in front of me, on that windy steep road.

Before the trip, I was concerned about my ongoing charging issues, as even after changing the regulator on my Bosch factory rebuild, cleaning all ground and battery connections, it still read only low OK on Alt output, and the battery seemed the same, just OK, though needed to be charged here and there.

I pulled the plug on the back of the alt, after removing the ground off the battery, and sprayed it with electrical contact cleaner, and engaged/disengaged it repeatedly, and spraying again as well as engaged/disengaged the plug a few dozen more times. Afterward the Alt tester reading looked good, and the the 2 lights on the cheapo cig lighter meter stayed on the whole trip. All good for now.

Ac run almost continuously  , a fair bit of dead time idling as it's hot here .

8 Oz. of Startron used , 342 miles , 28 MPG on the button .

I changed the clear plastic intake fuel filter in the Filing Station before taking it up (no fuel spill/dribble when below 1/4 tank , I'd had the low fuel light on all day) and when I shook it , it was full of tiny chunks .

I hope this was the end of the fungus , if it remains clear i'll add Power Service Diesel Kleen  instead of Startron .

[diesel_mercedes] Turbo Overhaul

I finally took it off and apart yesterday , it was filthy inside but both impeller wheels were remarkably clean .

I know the oil seals were gone as the inside of the ' cold ' (intake) side of the turbo were covered in a 1/16" coating of old black oil residue .

The shaft had too much axial (forth & back) play yet it was fairly stiff to turn by hand ~ I could twirl it wit my fingers but as soon as I let go , it stopped , didn't spin to a stop .

I'm taking some (crappy) pictures and will post 'em up when I'm done .

A seriously fiddly job indeed , good thing I try to keep my engine cleaner than most .

[diesel_mercedes] Routine Service

After some years , the Hirschman antenna in SWMBO's '82 240D began squeaking , she nagged me to lubricate it and I didn't so it naturally seized up in the lowered position leaving me sans radio .

I used the 13 MM toolkit wrench to loosen the nut then turned the radio on and it puked up the stuck antenna , I was unable to get two of the sections to extend by hand so I hooked the tip in a file cabinet @ work and yanked really hard albeit carefully as it's easy to bend these things and once bent it's game over .

Then I use Nev-R-Dull <magic> wadding to polish the rusty and dirty chrome shafts , it still didn't extend and collapse easily by hand so I collapsed it and got my lint free clean rags out and used starting fluid (ether) to wash the nylon cable and i dribbled some of that inside the collapsed shaft whilst holding the antenna up side down , let it soak a moment then began extending and collapsing it by hand , cleaning the spooge off as it came out .

I also sprayed the ether up into it from below , in time the clean white rags stopped showing any dirt / crud / spooge so I hand dried it all , allowed to dry then lubricated it with some oil I had at hand .

I'd wanted to use silicone spray or grease as Hirschman and M-B both suggest silicone lubricant but I didn't have any handy .

In any case it works like new again and the radio plays fine , even on AM .
