Re: [diesel_mercedes] Replacing the round air filter with a 'universal air filter.

Is your air cleaner solidly mounted or does it suffer from the common malaise of a broken bracket and sheared rubber stand offs?

I am having trouble with the air filter connections. The round nuts at the bottom of the housing keep loosening, and the ushaped hose from the air filter to the turbo keeps falling off. I know it prolly needs new rubber gaskets which go inside etc. but my mechanic (somewhat knows diesels), says that I should replace the whole filter assembly with one of those 'universal air filters' from Autozone etc.

At one end it would fit, with a hose clamp etc to the air inlet at the hood and the the other end would be clamped to the turbo inlet. The pvc pipe at the top of the engine would be routed to the inlet where this blow-by exhaust air actually goes.

This would be a clean solution, and I see no drawbacks, but would like to know if anyone has done this, or has any thoughts.

Are the brushes spring loaded? Maybe one wasn’t being used/touching?  Bill in Oregon

I agree. If you don't have a friend in the business (I do), head for Costco.
