Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: W201 190D questions

The Loyale is a small station wagon -2400 lbs- with less frontal area than a TDI, I reckon.  It comes with an 1800cc engine and pushbutton 4WD, i.e., it spends the majority of it's life in fwd..

When I first got the car, it had several niggling problems, bad temp sensor for the EFI, no T-stat, wrong plugs, oil leaks, I knocked all those out of the way and went for a test drive.  Had to pick up some prescriptions in Sacramento, 40 miles out and back.  Filled up and zeroed out the speedo at the start, cruised along at about 60 mph in 5th watching the gauges  and listening to the engine.

Got the pills, back to the gas station for another fill-up, did the arithmetic, came in at 39.6 mpg.  Did the arithmetic several more times, kept getting the same number.  Car is still fitted with 185-13 snow tires, I guess with skinny hard Michelins I could get into the 40s if I were inclined to drive that way...

32mpg in a Soob??! I've got a '99 Forester that I keep around only for the rare few days when the snow in the Seattle area paralyzes my Mercedes. For me though I couldn't get better than 21mpg out of it if I drove it off a cliff.  I suppose that having full time AWD and the wind resistance of a city bus doesn't help.
