You won't believe this - but - I actually carry an extra starter and solenoid + alternator in the trunk of my wife's w123. After all, you can't be too prepared for emergencies. Now, the other question is this - when I put the new half shafts on my car (Mary), should I store the one good half shaft in my wife's trunk (Martha) just in case one of hers goes bad. Hate the thought of trashing a 250,000 half shaft that still works.

It's telling you it wants a new starter solenoid RIGHT DANG NOW ! .
Tom argued this with me and we tinkered every other damn thing on the car and it got back at us by dying in Washington State at night , when it was cold , far from home (you DO NOT change an OM617 starter on the side of the road) , blah blah blah.......
Do it now when it's cheap (you'll find a freshly rebuilt one with new solenoid @ P-A-P) or wait until it stops when you're out on the road with SWMBO......
BTW : NAPA has good quality Bosch typ solenoids .
