I was under my car, '84 300D, last weekend. I think I saw what you
are referring to. Just follow all the fuel lines forward. One of
them stops and has a bell shaped thingy pointing down. I'm assuming
this is the air uptake for the vent. I think there was also a check
valve just aft of the bell thing.
