[diesel_mercedes] What is the function of the Control Pressure Rod?

 

Kevin is about ready to put fluids in my car and start her up.  He's got one question though that we can't seem to find the answer on...

What is the function of the Control Pressure Rod?

Does he have to have it hooked up right before he tries to start the car?
 
You may recall when we put the motor from the '80 300D into my '81 300D, we ran into a problem with the CPR hitting the firewall. 

The response from the group was to bend or cut it to fit. 

He said he's tried to bend it, but is having trouble getting it to fit. He hasn't gone to cutting yet.
