1. You can get a little $10 tester from Harbor Freight (and other FLAPS too) that will give you reasonably good read outs.
2. The voltage regulator is at the back of the alternator and is easy to remove / replace (compared to the alternator anyway). They are cheap too - I keep a spare in my trunk as most alternator failures aren't really alternator failures, but regulator failures - and often just cheap old carbon brush failures - start simple and work your way up the food chain. Guess what a shop would rather replace, the alternator or regulator brushes?

My daughters 83 300D just fried a new battery. It was the sealed type
so she couldn't check for water usage. Autozone reportedly checked the
alternator output with the new battery in place and said charging etc
was normal. If I remember correctly the voltage regulator is in the
alternator. It seems to me that the alternator is overcharging the
battery. I can change the alternator, but since it's a PITA am I
missing something else that could be causing the problem?
