Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: 300TD 1980 Wagon. Only high defrost

Well,

I've had two of these systems (in Mercedes-siz.  Also had one in a '72 Imperial coupe).  My total expenditure, on both units combined, is less than $100, including the rebuild kit for the York compressor in the '77 300D.  It does NOT include the pending purchase of a GM/Frigidaire compressor for the '79 SD.

Besides persistence and patience, finding an uncracked servo, and an unblown amplifier board, are the real keys.  Both are still showing up in PAPs in the Denver area.  The servo is a "heater control valve", usually less than $15 at the yards.  The amplifier is "misc. electrical", $2, if you're charged for it at all.  These are simple DA (differential amplifier) circuits that can often be repaired for little or no money.  The one in my '77 300D needed nothing more than some electrical connections touched up with a soldering iron.

It COULD be a vacuum problem:  My 300D had only worked in "DEF", too, even after I restored the amplifier board.  I found the main vacuum hose that fed the entire system had a dry section and was half broken in two.

My opinion:  It's hands-down MUCH cheaper and easier to get the original system going than to mess around with conversions and kluges....

Lawrence ;

It _ISN'T_ vacuum ! you've been reading my struggles with the Evil & dreaded Klima I Servo from HELL......

Unwired Tools now has a cheaper , not as fancy but gets you heat alternative to the $500 one .

FWIW , making the heat and AC work on your 1980 TD , will co$t you _WAYYY_ over $500 trust me on this ~ I'm a Journeyman Mechanic and a cheap a$$ Yankee Farm Boy and I only barely made it .
