[diesel_mercedes] Wiper Relay W123 & Leaky Oil Pres. Gauge

Thanx Rob,

That's a far better picture .

As far as the oil leak, if your oil pressure gauge had a jittery needle, it's almost certain the gauge is kaput .

If it was rock steady even at hot idle the 10MM ferrule nut on the back of the gauge _might_ be loose, it only takes a 1/16 turn to begin dribbling oil , guess how I know this ? .

I'd use a junkyard gauge, when you're removing it look for a tiny little thingie (Technical Term there) in either the gauge's port or the open end of the tube, it's a device to stop the gauge's needle from jittering and causing the gauge to fail .

I can provide both the part's proper German name and part # if necessary but most older Diesels have had this part installed decades ago so take a look for it .

Whilst you have the binnacle out and apart, get some Meguiar's Plastic _Polish_ (NOT 'Cleaner) and use it and some basic cheapo Scotts toilet tissue or lens tissues (in case you're suddenly rich) to clean both the inside and outside of the binnacle's lens ~ doesn't take long and really helps make the illumination at night .

Me, I ever so carefully hand wash the entire binnacle including the light guides.....

I hope this helps .

Hi Nate,

I was there earlier in the year:

I just replaced the W123 Windshield Wiper Relay, which is up behind the
gauge assembly, and just so you know, it can be replaced w/o removing
the gauges. I needed to do this because the intermittent function
stopped working on the wipers, and we seem to have rain this year.

Here's a forum post showing which relay is what, though the wiper relay
is way up top, against the dash:

While I was doing this, I noticed a bunch of black motor oil coming from
behind the gauges. What is that from, the oil gauge? easy fix? I have a
second set of gauges mounted on the steering wheel shaft cover, so it's
not easy to remove the gauge assembly, and get the parts I need before
opening it up further.

Thanks

Rob
