The venerable 4 cylinder OM616 powered 240D is an _economy_ car so it's not racy but , it's not slow either unless there's a problem with it ~ our 300,000 + mile 1982 240D Ca. spec. has one nearly dead cylinder but it still runs fine and returns good fuel economy and has no difficulty touring @ 60 MPH , even fully loaded . and , it only leaks a small bit of oil ! .
I choose not to press it faster (I've had it over 80MPH) as over revving the tiny low geared engine isn't going to help your wallet much less the car and fuel economy .
I find when I'm alone in the car it handily keep up with the traffic no matter where I'm driving , loading it up with two or more people does slow it down but no worries , just give the foot feed a bit more and it'll be fine .
If you're the typ who really needs to drive 70 + MPH , the 240D is _NOT_ the car for you as it'll drink fuel and oil plus pi$$oil everywhere and in time , need more routine service and repairs than you'll like .
Buy a 5 cylinder turbo model instead , you'll love it as will your wallet .
IMO , the perfect kids car is that low mileage clapped out S Klasse W-126 Diesel , you know , it runs great but has dents & scratches plus a bagged interior ~ these are cheap and plentiful , SAFE beyond compare and hard to kill by kids .
