some of you may remember my adventure, this summer, coming back from my
second drive to Colorado and back, where, I lost a radiator hose.......and
things went downhill, from there.
Well,
the SDL has been sitting in the garage, since then, waiting for me to have
the courage (initially, to see just what got screwed up) and then, the time
(super busy year, this year), to dive in.
Well, today was the day!!
I replaced the plastic reservoir (from my donor SDL), hooked up the hoses,
and turned on the key.
The glow plug light went out, and I hit "start"........heck, it started like
it had run yesterday!! And it has literally been sitting since late Early
August! Fired right off, ran a little rough, for a few minutes, then
smoothed right out.......
Then, the testing:
no water in oil. good.
no vapor out the exhaust, either at start up, or while idling. good.
running smooth and quiet (well, for that engine). good.
So, I took her for a test drive.........it took the heater a while to purge,
so was blowing cold air, for a while. But, I over filled the reservoir, so,
there was plenty, once it "burped". I went up and down steep things, and
such, to work the air out..........
Went up a 6% slope for 6 miles, at 70 mph (it'd go faster, but those pesky
curves and highway patrol slowed me down).
It go up to about 90 deg.C, at most, with my foot buried, whenever I could.
Some soot, but not bad, initially......after a few mins, none at all
visible.
so, I feel the engine came through its "high temp ordeal" fine.
Now, I have to tear into the front end.......it developed a "death wobble"
on the way across Utah and Nevada.........dang. I think it's the "breaking
struts" or whatever you call them........with the rubber ball and socket set
up.
End of report:
