quick guess is the wires to the plugs. Might have to take plugs out and test each outside the engine. one or two may be bad. I saw that on a video once. jmho

I had the same problem with a 240D, even did a valve job.  Checked everything, very hard to start but ran great once we got it running.  Never did find the problem.  We cut it up to put a front end on another car after it was sideswiped and we cleared enough insurance money to make it go away.  I wondered if the fuel timing was off, but I think I got it right when I replaced the head.  Never did figure out the problem.
