[diesel_mercedes] Hard starting 83 240D. Glow plugs are new. Modification included.

I replaced three glow plugs before I noticed the old ones were good. The
symptom is cranking for a long time. A little life. Then slowly starting with
a puff of black smoke when she really starts up. This sounds to me like I just
started with no glow plugs. The car starts better with no fast throttle and no
throttle until it coughs. Just like starting with no glow plugs. I measured
voltage at the glow plug and it's about 10.5vdc. Should there be that much
sag? I'm thinking about taking an old relay and plugging in to the harness and
just doing a manual hard wired glow plug cycle and just count to ten. Using the
old relay attached to a starter cable. That way I know the 12v battery is going
directly into the plugs. I suspect that somehow I'm not getting big amps to the
glow plugs. I have good compression but I don't know how long that will last if
I keep starting hard on vegetable oil. I did a diesel purge and that didn't
help. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Lawrence Rhodes.

For the modification you will need an external relay. Wire, switches, fuses.
Know How! But it's not too hard. You need to grind off the top of the
connection to the contacts to get the wire and connector off. With the top
ground off it twists off easily and will leave a little stud. Discard or
recycle this. Remove the contact on the other side with pliers. Bend the wire
to match and solder. Easy. You will need then to put a fuse and relay under
the hood and will have to do a wire run up to the modified relay which is just a
connector to the glow plugs now. You will also need small wire into the
passenger compartment and a switch. Lighting the glowplug light would be nice
but I don't know how to do that yet on the late models. I know on the under
dash relay system.
