Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Hard starting 83 240D. Glow plugs are new. Modification included.

My wifes glow is a 5-10 second affair (Martha); my glow is a 20 second affair (Mary). Don't know the why of it all. On Mary I have to wait for the clunk or click which means 10 sec on the light (or seat belt noise) and then count to 10 and wait for the "click" - no pedal depression. Sometimes I don't get the click, and start with just compression and 1/3 - 1/2 pedal. Mary (210,000) is a daily driver, Martha gets out once each week (290,000).

Note: I've replaced the glow's. Did a diesel purge. Adjusted the valves.
Could it be the idle setting or some other setting not normally used? It acts
like the glows are weak. I did a manual glow and when I put the cable to
battery it just made a little spark. Didn't seem to start any better. Maybe
worse so I reconnected the normal relay. Is it possible I need a much longer
time on the glow plugs? Something is wacko. Is flooding possible on a diesel
cause I get a big puff of black smoke when I finally start the thing. Lawrence
