Greg I'd just wiggle it and feel if its to sloppy.To repair Mercedessource has a kit with tool and instructions.However you may have a bad neutral safety switch.It goes on the transmiission.My gear shifter is loose and I have a kit,I will mail you free.

Don't mean to sound as a moron. But do I take out the shifter and check it how?
