Barry, have faith. Do all of the basics (especially a valve adjust) because these engines are made for climbing mountains (think Alps) as well as other things. Just keep a log and do one thing at a time.

Well the only things I have not done is valve's and fuel timing I had a little fuel leak that was letting a little air in making it run lean which made a bit of a nock. other than that it runs great.
I live at the to of a mountain the road has one real steep part that if I don't get a long run at it I almost don't make it. The third gear runs at about 3200 RPMs at fifty miles hour and that's when I hear the nocking other than that I can't figure what else to do.

I agree with the filters being clogged. As for wanting 40mpg, stop now,
you are wasting time and energy. It won't happen.
