On my trip back home in my recently purchased 73 220D manual, the starter acted as if it had zero current running to it, after I filled the tank up with #2 at Bakersfield. A guy who wanted the spot I was in came to help as he saw my dilemma. He had me drop it in second gear after pushing it 15-20 yards in a very busy gas station in front of bumper to bumper traffic. Started perfect, maybe even fired up on the first rotation. The guy said first gear is too much of a shock for the car, second is best. It reminded me of some of the easiest kick starts I have ever seen on a motorcycle.

If you have a four speed, then its just like anything else with a manual
for bump starting. I tried my automatic once on what I thought was a
good hill , didnt do nothing. But , wow, really good in the snow. You
should see my driveway, car is bank to bank, with some good hills, as
long as the snow is cold , no problems. My automatic wouldnt start
because of neutral safety switch and linkage issues. Bypassed it,
starts every time, not worried about starting in gear. Max
