Re: [Diesel-RVs] Moving to Full-Timing

what works for us...fulltime since 1997 (first in 40' fifthwheel..then 40'
Dutch Star Diesel now on second diesel pusher--42 foot motor home with
Harley on lift on back towing Dakota 4x4)...am regretting going bigger than
the 40 foot in way--some places harder to get into (doesn't sound like a
lot, but makes a difference)
Have not regretted fulltime RV living...over ten years in confined
space...man, woman, big yellow cat, pomeranian.....and we haven't "killed
each other" yet!
maybe this will hit some of your "high spots"...direct email is always
welcome
charli@strato.net if questions-- I think we've corresponded before...

--we use laptop/internet to keep in touch, and to pay bills and do banking
and have had great success with the simple (for us) Verizon Broadband air
card that gives us 24/7 internet access for $59 a month. (the little bit of
non-coverage is
not worth worrying about...but we don't go to Canada, Mexico or any far off,
high altitude etc places)....some people like the sat.dishes/fancy expensive
hookups/the systems that require cellphones and antennas and all that
"stuff"
weike being able to slap a credit card size gizmo in the side of our laptop
and saying "I'm on the internet".... to each his own.

-- we do like the in motion satellite (and have Direct TV with our east and
west networks etc)...it is particularly handy when running from Florida
hurricanes etc.

--Our Dutch Star DP was 40 foot...now have Mountainaire DP 42 feet (the
motorcycle lift for the Harley adds about 3 feet...so, make that "45" and
tow Dakota 4x4 quad cab pickup.
--chassis: we've owned Spartan and Freightliner (now)--but its the big
Freightliner
not the size under Winnebagos, etc...we have the heaviest chassis they make
under the MADP--so, far the big FL is about equal to the Spartan
Mountainmaster we had on the Dutch Star....
--slides, I might have two in the bedroom along with the dining/living
slide, but DEFINITELY NOT a slide on passenger side in LR (can knock your
head off when try to go in bays--makes hard to get to freezer too)--
wouldn't mind a Prevost with
no slides...(:o)!
-- I think Cummins diesel and Onan generators (have powertech now--and boy
what a hassle getting generator fixed) -- experience with both Cum. & Onan,
easy to get serviced.

--can't advise on out of USA, we WON'T do that.

-- naturally, good CSP (ours is excellent-- it has already paid out about
$4000 since July)...some like to "self insure"... not us.
-- Good road service (ours is excellent--more than paid for itself several
years ago)
-- I wouldn't want tag axle, lose storage space, have to buy two more
tires...etc.
might give you better ride. 43 foot and bigger supposed to have tag.
-- our mail forward service has been excellent (former Mailboxes etc/UPS
store), gives us permanent address etc. (we're Florida residents)
--sold homes in NC - bought and sold two RV lots in central FL over the ten
years...
in process of selling (we hope), RV lot in Mission Texas (on way there now
to work on that).... just bought "perfect" (for us) lot in Mt.OliveShores
South in Polk City FL
(closer to friends, family, Tampa VA, and other things)
we do have some "valuables" in storage in Charlotte NC --need to do
something about all that.
-- campground memberships, we do like Passport America ... dropped Coast to
Coast, Escapees and some others--money burners.

If missed anything--let us know.... all this is "WWFU & IMO"

KarenB&JimB
Walmarting it in Wharton Texas
(just ate at new Chilis, shopped at WalMart etc
on way to Mission TX.... last nite, Camping World/Dixie RV on
I 12 near New Orleans)
