The speedo and odo do run off the same gear, but, the speedo uses a magnetic coupling with a spring to return the needle to zero, and this spring can be strong or weak.  Or, the needle may not be set at the same point on the pivot in your car as it is on my car, so there may be differences in what my speedo says compared to yours, even when we're both going the same actual speed.  Keep in mind that speedo manufacturers often calibrated the guages to display faster than the actual speed, for liability and maybe safety sake.

The odo, on the other hand, is more directly connected to the gear in the transmission, though by a slip clutch.

I thought the speedo and the odo ran off the same gear, no? My 82 has a
drain plug low center below the manifolds. Fairly easy to get to. I
plumbed the coolant heater into it.
Handy for flushing having a hose attached there. I was able to flush it
out backwards, bottom -up, as it were.
