[diesel_mercedes] Re : Bulb - In Headlight Service

I don't know the '92's but I do know the various replaceable bulb head lights .

Yes , it all comes apart and there are gaskets every step of the way , usually re usable if you're gentle .

Are you 1,000 % _CERTAIN_ the dirt is inside the lens ? this is rare , most of the time the exterior of the lens gets pitted or simply yellows if they're plastic .

Either can usually be greatly improved by polishing , the plastic ones are easy to damage by heat buildup from a spinning drill motor polishing , I do all plastic lens cleaning and service by hand .

There are cleaning and polishing kits for both types .

Never , _EVER_ touch the reflector ! it is silvered and the only correct method of cleaning is to use Lamp Black and cotton wadding , it's still super easy to scratch & dull it so don't touch it unless you're willing to gamble $1,000 or so for new ones after you've ruined the reflectors *so* badly a Cop will give you a fix it ticket in broad daylight , lights off , no foolin' .

The bulbs too , must always be handled with extreme caution as one tiny partial finger touch will cause rapid failure ~ never trust a bulb is clean out of the box ! always use clean tissue (Lens or Toilet) to wipe the entire glass part of the bulb just before you put it in the hole ~ older 'Benz you'll have to plug it into the wiring harness before inserting the lamp into the head light and reflector assy. ,this is where most tiny finger brushes occur .

BTW : I've saved a few antique reflectors by having them chromed ~ be aware this isn't optically pure like the original silvering was but it's a do - able thing when faced with ruined , unobtanium parts .

I also assume that there should be some kind of gasket or seal between the lens and housing. I've found such seal for other models but not for mine. Any help? Thanks.
