My wife uses a TENS unit (electronic pulse) once in awhile, for some shoulder, rib and back pain. It has corresponding sticky pads that you place on the skin, as on the muscles on either side of the spine. When she pulls out the machine, I know it's bad.
The hot tub works pretty well in conjunction with other treatments.
