You are supposed to pry it's little white end cap off and lubricate it periodically , no one ever bothers (not even the Dealer) and they sometimes cause the dashboard to catch fire ! .
The good news is : this $135.00 part occasionally drops to sale price of under $50 and I've found some replacement ones on W-126's in the junkyards , of course you'll want to test it before buying a used one
