Do your self a favor ~ take it to any muffler shop and they'll lift it up so you can walk around with a good flashlight and inspect the floors (first to go) , the seams along the bottoms of the rocker panels , these skinny welded seams are called " pinchwelds " and if any bubbles or small holes are found , beware as the rust begins _inside_ so by the time there's a tiny 3/16" hole , it needs $2,000 woth of work to be set right again .
Also unload the _ENTIRE_ trunk of all that crap and lift the rubber mat (! carefully !) , look for rust holes , reach up inside the rear fenders inside the trucnk , feel for rust....
Bubbles in the paint below the windows , around the lights or side mouldings , all these are trouble spots .
There's lots of " Heckflose" Fintails and Pontons about , most have varying rust problems un less you're buying one that's had the body restored , this is the higher price of an old Mercedes .

I am considering buying a fintail or ponton but I am unsure where to look for rot on these models. Most of the ads I see indicate that the cars have "little rust" but frequently they really mean "little rust for the age" which means frame rot may be present...I'm sure you know what I am getting at. Anyway, the common rot points and other major concerns not easily repaired are what I am interested in. thanks.
