The auxiliary water pump runs so the heat doesn't taper off when you're waiting for a red light in cold weather....
Many folks just unplug and by pass it when it seizes up here in Sunny So. Cal. .
Me , I'm just a Journeyman Mechanic not an Automotive Engineer so I rarely think I can make changes that'll improve on the best designed Automobiles in the World , I just replace the flusherginner pumps when they pack it in and drive happy , no dash board fires , plenty of heat , I even have AC for my Death Valley jaunts....
I'm *so* stupid , I even use the original Becker Electronic radio as it works fine and has crystal clear sound quality unlike many 'upgrade' after market radios , hell ~ it never fails to find lots of stations no matter how far away from Civilization I get .
FWIW , YMMV so on....
