[diesel_mercedes] 84 300 SD - Will me starter woes ever stop?

Went to show off Sylvia to a friend visiting from town, both of us climbed in, put on our seatbelts, I extolled the virtues of this fine automobile to my friend while reaching around the steering column to put the key in the ignition and fire it up one more time. Had been running/starting w/ no problems for last 2 months since getting the starter wiring harness sorted and tightened and -- when I realized this last week -- I was on the verge of sending a grinning Sylvia update, and now, well more of a grimace.

So the key goes in, the lights light up. The buzzers time out, the car goes quiet. Hit the starter - you get a solid click (assuming its the starter gear being engaged to the flywheel, or at least some sign of life in the solenoid), but no love from the heart of the starter. Just the silence of not going anywhere.

Since my friend is a second generation Dane, I was glad to know that
plan B was a "smokin" 33 year old Swedish Saab 99 Turbo. I say smokin because the head gasket is oozing a bit of oil from time to time and making the cabin air almost smell like a two-stroke. :^)

Have checked known wiring junctions and the lot - fuses, ground straps, battery leads, ignition harness from above. Tugged on the harness, rapped (gently) on starter and solenoid. Pushed car up fwd/back in/out of gear and tried starting in P and N. Ignition lockout circuit seems ok as you get no click/sound if car is in D,3,2,1. All the above and still no love.

Anyone got suggestions before I call AAA and take it my trusty local?

Given my current schedule, I won't be able to get to this until May.

cheers and thanks in advance,

-Barton
