I was thinking about this today also. We have all owned many different kinds of cars and trucks in our lifetime. I started with a 1950 Oldsmobile but quickly added Chrysler, Ford, and other products ranging from a 1930 DeSoto on up to "modern" cars - all gassers, mostly v-8s, mostly big horsepower.  But in the end, they are all gone and I am content with two 1983 diesel w123's - with no desire or intent to do anything else. I mean that is like 50 or 60 cars and trucks over the years. How and why did I end up with only these two MB's? Well, some of it has to do with space (old age home now, no 3 car garage anymore). But a lot has to do with the Popular Mechanic philosophy of life. If you tinkered when you were a kid, and you were comfortable with fixing your bicycle, then wrenches were a part of your life. So it is more than "cheap" - it could be part of superior intelligence, and a desire to build better mousetraps.

On a slightly related subject I have noticed that the members of this group tend to the "frugal", a quaint Anglo-Saxon euphemism for cheap, which leads them to spend inordinate amounts of money in the perpetuation of an outdated, albeit bulletproof vehicle.  As is common with addictive personalities, they have fixated on the logical design, basic good looks and solid construction which leads them to overlook the fact that a modern vehicle can be obtained which will at least match the fuel economy and provide,  for a few years , a relatively untroubled experience.  As for me, Guilty as charged.
