The entrance fee was raised a few years ago to $3, about the same time, the parent company LKQ Corp. reduced the operating hours and raised the prices on the wildly popular discount days, usually during holiday weekends, they used to have 50 % off sales , now they're mostly 40% off and occasionally only 30% .
In 2019 they changed the popular 'Monday Madness' sale of $7 for any steel wheel and tire to only the tire, not a friendly thing to do and not that much more profit for them as many would buy oddball old wheels with junk tires, junk steel wheels are supposed to be treated as hazardous waste just like tires but they're not .
Wheels have a painfully small scrap value, less than one dollar each .
I came up with the Inner City Anti-Theft Appearance Group moniker because I saw so many metal coat hangers doing duty on beaters and I'd get asked "when are you going to replace that ?" ~ the answer was : when I'm ready to sell the car as it used to be a thing to randomly snap the antennas off parked cars for no reason.....
I always try to inject humor into things, God knows the daily grind can be pretty depressing at times .
LKQ refunds the $3 entrance fee if you buy anything .
I tried to buy hardware and other tiny little bits but they were always hostile to my handful of hardware or bulb sockets etc. so I stopped asking and just take the little things that otherwise would b swept up and discarded .
LKQ is only partially in the used auto parts business : their main profit comes from the raw scrap metal, including the alloy wheels that now are more plentiful than steel wheels .
I think to - day I'll work on the car in the driveway until I get tired and quit while I'm ahead, I had a lot of shoulder / arm pain last night after the Ibuprofen wore off in the wee hours of the night .
Prolly take to - morrow off and spend it with my Sweet, take her to breakfast, wash my work clothes and so on .
There's a local Mercedes car club meeting this coming Saturday and I'd like to drive the wagon, we'll see if the new / used seat belt arrives and gets cleaned up in time to install it .
