My 40 foot 1954 GMC bus was 6volt. But I had to put in a 8volt battery and rig the voltage regulator. Max

I'll take that as a compliment Max .
I now have the block heater cord's block end, I need to get busy and rustle up a nice heavy duty _long_ cord with molded on three prong plug and solder & heat shrink it up just in case I ever get foolish and go some place that's actually cold .Most folks in cold country use 5 ~ W40 Diesel rated oils, they help those old 6 volt beaters crank over better too .-NateMax wrote :What oil do you use? I don't care what anyone says about starting their diesel Mercedes at -40, ect., ect. Sure you might get it started a few times but eventually you will kill something, battery, starter. The best thing for these cars is a factory type block heater. These things work so amazing. Here is the true story of how I ended up with 2- 240's. I bought my first one, the 1980 4spd. Of course I loved it. Learned about how safe they are for non air bag cars, crumple zones and all so I bought on for my oldest kid who was heading off to college. The car came from San Jose area. 1981 240 auto.Driving it home (900 miles) I realized that the car ran great. I told my kid if he didnt want it I would buy it back from him. So actually I bought it twice. Bozeman was his school of choice. Now I know Montana gets cold so we put in a block heater. I was wrongly assuming he could plug the car in from his dorm room. Turned out there was no place to plug it in. I even call the guy who runs the college and complained that my kid needed to plug his car in. He informed me rather curtly "Montana winters and diesel cars do not match" Eastern Montana gets really cold. That winter it was -40 several times. His car did not run at all that winter and he left and said "I will never go back to Montana". He hated that car so I bought it back from him and then he got a Subaru WRX-STI. He said the Mercedes was a old gomer car. I guess we all are gomers. Max It finally warmed up to 32 degrees here in NE Wa.
