Hi, I was concerned about the lo temps in MD last week. So the usual was done....newer battery, starter, glowplugs, changed oil to to usual rottella t6. And she fires up with 3 recycles of the glow plugs on first try.. Block heater died some years ago, just when I moved to MD....never needed it in SF bay area.
So what I usually do is plug in one of these electric cooking coils and place it just below the oil plan to heat up the oil. But an easier thing I do is to take about half a quart of engine oil, in a glass jar (old spaghetti sauce), heat in MW till it is very hot, and pour it into the engine oil crankcase. Dont know how much it helps, but I do this at v cold temps. MD rarely gets below zero.
Looked at all those alternatives to blockheater, eg dipstick heater etc.,but did not care for any of them. No mechanic wants to take on removing the old blockheater.
!984 300sd, 250+++ miles, odo broke then.
Driven up and down both coasts.
Has never given up, and still ultra reliable
