[diesel_mercedes] Freon

Just so Mark ;

For a while there they were salvaging the oil R12 and selling it , I wonder how they filtered and de contaminated it ? .

I've been studying up on AC Service since I've not done any since 1986 or so and there's a lot of comments that 20 + year old AC hoses simply degrade and become slightly porous , they recommend either new hoses complete or re using your old ends with new modern typ hose....

We'll see .

I still have to work out what and how the two switches on the receiver-dryer are _supposed_ to work and be connected , fix whatever is wrong there , before I begin to think about flushing the system , new compressor , new hoses and so on .

I no longer remember how to purge the AC Gauges , for example and I know this is very important for satisfactory long term results .

I'm assuming you're recharging with R-134a.  R-134a is a much smaller molecule than R-12, or atmospheric air, so if there's a place for it to escape, it will.

20-years ago, when doing conversions from 12 to 134a was at it's peak, some supplier (I can't remember who.  Advertised in "The Star", among other places) sold a kit that included not only refrigerant, connector adaptors, PAG oil, etc, but also "barrier hoses", the claim being that the stock hoses in R-12 systems used in W116, 123 and 126 cars would leach out R-134a.  I've also seen evaporators that developed pinholes that would leak R-134a, but not R-12.

30-years ago, before yards were required to remove the refrigerants, it was not uncommon to come across then 15-, 20-year-old-cars with a full charge of R-12 still in their systems.  If you loosened a connection, or broke or cut a hose, you were in for a surprise...!
