I hear you ~ often when they're left like this sans air cleaner rain water gets in and ruins the engine .
A few years ago I bought a complete fan to tranny Chevy 292 inline six cylinder engine , it was stuck so I only paid $100 (IIRC) for it , good thing too as the block had been bored out to .060" and couldn't be cleaned up , new sleeves are available but so are good used 292's if you look hard enough .
I have also suffered mightily when the engine was full of mouse nests....
