O.K. Trish ;
Keep on plugging away at it , you'll get there and when you do , ZOWIE ! you'll soon learn why the Mercedes W-116 Diesel Sedan was the most popular car they ever built . the 1979 year model (identical to your 1980) was the biggest selling year .
Me , I prefer the W-123 Chassi but you have a sweetie there , even when old & battered .
You'll see .
I hope you've book marked & downloaded that W-116 manual , you'll be referring to it for years to come .
When I lived in abandoned trailers in Rural New England , we make plywood skirts between the floor and the ground ~ fitting the skirts tightly prevents the wind from whistling underneath and freezing you nearly to death .
Rich folks (honest , I knew some) used fibreglas insulation inside the skirts and it was actually _warm_ underneath , I know because I had to go fix the danged water pipes more than once in January , both fresh and grey water pipes...
