That being said lets look at what it might cost. 2k for a used transmission. 3k for a used engine installation. Another 2 grand for front end work. Even after that it's still cheaper than buying a new car & I guarantee you will keep fixing it. But in the end you will have a durable, dependable, easy to fix car that will last long after the new car you didn't have to drive is retired & you can run the Mercedes diesel on waste vegetable oil. Try that on a Honda Fit. Looking on these cars as parts cows will thin the herd as no more are being made.
