If you are not using the headlight and the battery still drains then it is not the headlight. My first Benz, a 75 300d, would kill batteries. It turned out to be a stuck-on glowplug relay. BTW, diesels, especially these diesels, do not die for lack of electricity. So I am assuming it died for other reasons, and THEN you could not get it started because the battery was dead for some other reason. Try this, start it up, turn on the headlights, and disconnect the glowplug relay and watch to see if the lights get brighter when you unplug the relay.
