Such a short would almost certainly blow a fuse instantly.
I'm just guessing here, but I'm leaning toward a stuck glowplug relay or a bad regulator/brush set.

Thanks Tom,

Does the light glow if the regulator is bad? I will check on my drive tonight.   I think I am praying for a bad battery.  But I will check the wiring to the headlight, to see if I pinched, pulled, or otherwise caused a short. 

It started in the AM, but not after I stopped for breakfast.  I will say the lights, radio, and air were still on when I tried the restart.  But the 40 miles at 70 mph should have charged the battery even more.  I will check and report back tomorrow.
