Sometimes you have to wiggle the tester in the socket and work the ashtray in & out a bit so it'll work correctly .

Keep us posted ~ the bad stink , maybe like rotten eggs ? (sulfur) smell out of a new battery means it was defective from the jump , a fairly common happenstance as bad batteries tend to come in manufacturing batches...

Ah yes, a little bit of the old in and out.  I'll probably change the voltage regulator although that seems like a proctological number with the alternator in the car.
