This is SOOO vwnate's arena. He has this down to a science. Do a search of the archives, using "cooling system", "flush" and "nate" as keywords. He may even have posted a compete procedure in the forum's library.
More than ph, these cars are sensitive to ANY rust or corrosion in the system. If your car has ever spent any of it's life in warm climes, chances are it's been run without some sort of rust-inhibiting antifreeze, in which case, you may have some work ahead of you....
(One good thing is that your '78 has no plastic in the radiator, like the later ones did.)

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] recommended coolant & flush
Hello All
My 1978 300D is running hot, about 220 degrees Fahrenheit, at high speed on a very hot day. I have replaced the thermostat & radiator cap. This helped a little, but not enough.
Is there a recommended antifreeze and radiator flushes? I have read that the cooling system is sensitive to pH.
thank you
Rodger
