Run Ubuntu. You can always have both on your computer. I fire one of mine up on Ubuntu (like right now), and then go to XP where all my old programs reside.

Not everything is made to run on non-Windows operating systems.

I just bought me a nifty HP color laser printer at the Ultimate Electronics "Going Out Of Business Sale". I've been dying to get such a beast for years; now, I was finally able to get one for a decent price. Only problem is: There are no drivers for this particular printer to run on the Mac OS. I'd return it, but, all sales are final. So now I'm going to have to download X-Code and jigger something up. SHAME ON YOU, HP!

Having said that, I'm seriously considering putting Ubantu on my daughter's Dell laptop. We've had it for about a year and a half, and it's been more troublesome than the 3 Macs in the house have given in 5 years, combined. She insisted on it because she wanted to play some games that would not run on the Macs. (In reality, she mostly uses it for media production. Hello! Mac!!) A few months ago, something got in there that crashed the hard drive, so THAT had to be replaced. Now, it's running REALLY slow, and just randomly shuts down. If it wasn't for Costco's complimentary extended warranty service, this thing would have been in the dumpster months ago.

We're going to have to do SOMETHING with this Dell. It was supposed to last her through college, another 8-10 years. I'm loathed to dump computer hardware that's younger than that (I'm typing this message on a 14-year old Mac 8600 PowerPC running Tiger, soon to be upgraded to Leopard). If Ubantu will give the Dell a second chance, well, that may be a better destiny than the landfill....

Windows 7 is the current operative system sold by Microsoft.

X Snow Leopard is the current operative system sold my Mac.

Ubuntu is an operative system which is updated twice a year, it is based on Linux and is totally free.

There are loads and loads of versions of Linux, read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Linux_distributions

I chose Ubuntu because it has a graphics interface similar to both Windows and Mac. You just point and click and there are drop down menu's etc. Everything is there, you get to choose which browser and mail program you prefer, the office suite is very powerful as is Gimp the Linux version of Photoshop. Again though everything is free. With regards to virus's and malware etc you would have to actively install it for it to work and that includes stuff coming through Internet and mail and you would need to be quite clever to be able to do that.

Any other programs you might want to install are in the depository, CAD programs, Astronomy, Ham radio, Geniology, Finance and hundreds of other including of course Google Earth, Picasa etc again all for free.

When you are connected to the Internet there is a thing called Update Manager, opening this shows a selection of improvements and advances that have been made to the system or to programs in the depository ensuring that you are always up to date. Twice a year in April and October Ubuntu is renewed thus the releases 11.04 (now) and 11.10 in the autumn.

There's lots more here are 25 reasons:

Ubuntu is Free and so any other Linux distro. (Saved ~ $250)
You don't have to buy Office (Word, Power-point, Excel etc.) separately. It comes with OpenOffice preinstalled. (Saved ~ $200)
You don't have to buy costly hardwares for the basic need. (RAM. Processor, HDD etc.)
Ubuntu is more stable.
You are free from Viruses so you don't have to buy another upgrade of Norton or any other Antivirus software. (Saved ~ $75)
When you have installed Ubuntu, you don't have to install anything else to get you started with your productivity.
You don't have to wait for years for the bugs to get fixed. You can track them down in Ubuntu.
You can update everything on your system with just one update manager. No need to run separate Update manger for all the softwares you installed. (Saves your system resources.)
