Early Benz alternators are rated @ 55 amps and regulated @ 13.8 VDC.
This was fine before we started adding goodies! You should keep a
100% safety margin where the output of the alternator is concerned.
In other words, If you put a constant 40 amp demand on your
electrical system you should have a 80 amp alternator to insure your
battery remains charged. Another issue with the early Benz is that
the alternator would not put out full rated voltage at idle. Again,
not a problem with a stock car. Start adding even more goodies such
as an upgrated stereo with an amplifier, crank the AC and go sit in
traffic and your battery is left waiting to be recharged. My High
Output Alternators help solve these issues in 2 ways. They are rated
@ 85 amps and have smaller pullies that maintain a full charge rate
even at idle. Best of all they are direct replacements and need no
special brackets or electrical harness. Just take out your old tired
alternator and replace it with the upgraded unit. Shorter fan belts
may be required. If you can't adjust your belts to the proper tension
get the next size shorter. You should always use new belts when
changing any components so now would be a good time to replace them
anyway. Price for the alternator is $180 shipping included in the
continental USA. Canada add $5. Anywhere else add $10. Please specify
single or double pully when ordering.

I've read somewhere there's a Volvo or something that has an
alternator that "fits" but needs a little mod, and puts out 80amps as
well..

I'm thinking about pulling the alternator off my 240D, while it's not
on the road anyway, to "donate" it's life to a upbuild.. There's a
local alternator/starter REPAIR shop-- yeah, a greasy guy with about
4 teeth who still rebuilds them.. Does a nice job, w/warranty.. He's
done starters and alternators for me for years.. Has even refused to
take $$'s for one that wasn't bad... (turned out I had a bad starter
solenoid-- my truck had two-- and I'd only checked the one on the
fender!) He sold me the part, and said, if you could get that *^%M
starter out of there, without killing yourself, this isn't worth you
paying ME to do.. He did, however, pull the starter apart, to check
the brushes, etc.. "Nope, it's just that, have a good day.."

THAT was worth whatever I paid, for the part..

Anyway-- If someone can JUSTIFY $180 for an alternator, let me know..


...are the windings GOLD or sumthin??
