The pinion bearings are tapered roller bearings. The only needle
bearings in the driveline are those in the universal joints -- four
sets in each U-joint.

If either one of the pinion bearings is loose enough to vibrate, you
are probably going to also need a ring gear and tail pinion, along with
both of the pinion bearings. Even if you do the work yourself (which I
wouldn't recommend), you're looking at more than $1,000 just for the
parts!

I have a hunch it will still turn out to be a U-joint or the yokes out
of phase with each other.

When the driveline was reinstalled, some of the needle bearings might
have fallen out of one of the U-joint's bearing caps.
