Is it possible that the tiny chunks are bits of old hose that are trying to give you a warning of something? The way you describe driving to work, to Pasadena and to SWMBO's house, you're not letting any fuel sit in the system long enough to grow fungus.
Over here on the west side, the fuel is all clean. Probably the nice salt breezes from Santa Monica bay kill off the fungus.
