Hi Bob,
Thanks for the reply.
After much ado Ford has said that I can flat tow the 2005 5 speed F-150.
With the exception that the speed can't exceed 55 MPH. Since there is no way
in the world that I could limit my traveling to that slo poke speed. I was
wondering if you maintained any such speed limits while towing your Mustang.
To be safe I will unhook and drive it every 400 to 500 miles.
I had planned to change the Mercon that came in the Trans with the synthetic
Mercon V that Ford has approved as a replacement ATF since they discontinued
the dino Mercon. After doing some research online there now seems to be
different opinions if the Mercon V can replace the old Mercon in some of
Fords standard transmissions as it has in all their automatic transmissions.
Here we go again.

wheel drive
Ford does not list it as towable because they claim that the bearing
at the end of the tail shaft of the transmission does not get
adequately lubricated with the transmission in neutral. This bearing
turns whenever the driveshaft turns. Apparently the spinning of the
gears splashes oil back there when you are driving, but not if it is
in neutral. That being said, I had the same explaination for not
towing a 96 Mustang 5 speed manual. Possibly the same or similar
transmission. I towed the Mustang any way for over three years and
45K miles with no problems. I made it a point to drive the car at
least around the block before hooking it up, and never towed it over
500 miles without driving it.
