#1 : get some special wrenches or pay to have it done but have the valves adjusted A.S.A.P. .

#2 : upgrade all the glow plugs to the later 'pencil' typ as your current series setup _will_ fail and when it does all four glow plugs quit .

To do this properly you'll need to replace the early glow plug harness, not hyard to make one up from scratch, use HEAVY GAUGE WIRE as they draw lots of current .

#3 : Do a HOT OIL & filter change, replacing the fuel filters (there's two of them) at the same time, be sure to only use the clear plastic primary intake fuel filter so you'll know whenever some crud gets into the fuel
(happens more often than most realize and the translucent filters mean you can't tell, the car just stops)

#4 : Go to your F.L.A.P.S. and buy a bottle of Poer Service (brand) "Diesel Kleen" in silver ot white bottle and dump 1/3 of it in, save the rest .

#5 : now go drive and enjoy your Classic Mercedes Diesel Economy car, don't be afraid of it .

If you choose 'no E-Mail' in the settings you won't be swamped with unwanted messages, you can always trap the 'reply' address and write replies from your E-Mail inbox .

Hi Bill,
I have sent out several messages to the list, first through my regular email utility (Thunderbird), then through the Charter webmail, and finally on the group page. So far, that is the only one that has gotten through. I have retyped my info several times! Very frustrating.
So here goes again, on the group page. I have a 1977 W123 240D with series glow plugs and the metal relay under the dash. I just bought the car a few months ago and need to get the bugs out of it.
I'm beginning to realize that the car had fairly good cosmetic workover on it shortly before I bought it, and he did a few major things, but he seems to have ignored the basic condition of the engine. Well, that's fine. We can fix that, right?
I think I need to replace every filter. Three tries and then a stumbling start, no smoke. Since fiddling with the relay, that seems better, though the blade fuse looks corroded and I think it would be a smart thing to put a fresh one in.
