Oil rises on top of water. That bit you found could be all there was over a period of three years, if you didn’t see any in the fluid you drained.  Bill in Oregon

This intrigues me a bit. Based on the oily crud in the old thermostat (which was only 3 years old), I am thinking I may have some blobkage - but the drained coolant and water looked fine. I suspect I may try a back flush and pull the bottom hose off before I get too excited - just to make sure the water pump is circulating water through the system which I don't think is happening right now.
