[diesel_mercedes] Re: 1981 240D Running Problems

O.K. then ;

I'm to assume it runs poorly when you foot is on the throttle then ? .

Most of the time this will either be crud blocking the fuel flow , might be the in tank screen , the primary fuel intake screen near the transfer pump or the spin on secondary fuel filter ~ remember I uust went through that and I'd replaced the secondary filter a month or three before....

Make _SURE_ you use the clear primary fuel filters so you can *SEE* what's going on in there ~ one small bubble is O.K. , more are not , tiny chunks of black crud mean problems too , use 3 ~ 5 Oz. of Statron per tankfull to get rid of it , takes a while if it's really bad .

Using the wrong typ of fuel hose (fractional instead of Metric) or the gear typ of hose clamps often causes running issues too ~ it's a very simple engine but , you have to dot every i and cross every t to make it run sweetly .

If the small rubber return hoses between the  injectors are wet , that'll do it too .

Thanks for the colors!

It's intermittent. When it's not screwy, it runs like a top. I've
changed out the filters, yesterday, put in diesel Kleen white and
Startron. I've driven maybe 50 miles since that and I just drove to
town, about 12 miles, and it was fine until I got home. I haven't
adjusted the valves recently, but they were done in the recent mileage
past. The odometer has been out after it failed at 210K. The
intermittent problem sort of lets out the valve adjustment. I blew back
through the fuel line into the tank for a half-ass clean of the tank
strainer. It was 20 degrees here this morning and it started right up.

I'm still baffled.
