You could have a place on the flywheel that is missing a tooth. If the starter gear finds that spot, it’ll whir but has nothing to grab and turn the flywheel by.
It could be that the starter gear is not going forward enough to engage the flywheel. This could be a weak starter solenoid, or a battery that is getting low. Bill in

On a hard start day after the third try starting I am getting a whirring noise from the starter and the starter does not crank. Could this be the starter, the flywheel or both or something else?
BTW the new pictures on the page look great.
