On my '81 I had to either pull up on the shifter or push down on it (I don't remember which) to get it to move to the left and into reverse. Was that working OK for you before the current difficulty?

My recently purchased '77 240d stick shift has no reverse. It appears the shifter will not go over far enough to let it shift into reverse.
Shifter moves freely into the forward gears, no trans noise.
I haven't had it on a lift yet. What should I look for?
