It's far more common for the head gasket to blow and allow exhaust gasses into the water jacket , especially so in iron heads .
The test is very simple , a device fitted in lieu of the radiator cap is filled with yellow liquid & the engine started , goose the throttle and if the liquid turns purple , you've got a combustion leak .
Farm/junkyard way : engine hot , remove fan belt and top up coolant to the top of the radiator neck , start the engine and tromp on the throttle ~ if you see tiny bubbles , it ain't Tony Bennet coming to visit .
