[diesel_mercedes] axle will not go back in

 

I needed to replace a torn cv boot on my 81 126. Removed axle with no problem and removed the inner cv joint. Put on the new boot filled with grease and put the cv joint back on the axle. When I tried to put the axle back on the car, it would not fit. The axle is firmly seated in the rear end and the joints are collapsed as far as they will go but the axle will not clear the backing plate. I loosened the shock to see if I could get just a little more room. NOPE. It still will not fit. I have been messing with this for two days and am at a loss. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong or suggestions on what to do. HELP. Tom.
