[diesel_mercedes] Stalling In Reverse , Poor Fuel Economy '81 240D

SWMBO's beloved 240D had been suffering a slow decline in fuel mileage and then she called me in a pabice once or twice saying it had simply stalled out when backing out of a parking space , she's terrified it will strand her somewhere so , I looked at the clear plastic intake screen , it had no debris but the screen part was soft black so I changed it then removed the Secondary fuel filter and Lo ! it appeared to be full of black coffee , plus the steel part between the threaded hole and the rubber seal , was dead black and about 1/16" thick with crud so I filled the new filter with Power Service Cetane Booster (shoulda used the silver bottle " Diesel Kleen " I know but) and buttoned it up , re started it and ran it at a fast idle for a while to bleed it out and noticed the last injector's blind rubber hose , was wet ~ touching it allowed a thin dribble of Diesel Fuel to leak out so I replaced it with the new return hose bit I always carry in the driver's side map pocket and now it seems fine , it certainly idles smoother , it has never , _ever_ stalled out on me so I don't know if it was the new fuel filters and hose repair or the Cetane Boost that made it well again but she's been driving it a couple days now in the 100 degree het and no stalls so I guess it was just a routine filter change needed .

I took picture of the dirty fuel filter and will try to post it up next week .

Tom and I went to San Bernadino Pick-A-Part where they had seeral old Mercedes from the charity auction , two rather nice shiny and clean 1977 240D's , both had been _raped_ by the local M-B Mechanics out that way but both looked to have been easily fixable .

I wish I knew where this charity auction is that sells good Mercedes for junkyard prices , I'm not really up to restoring them but I hate seeing nice cars getting scrapped .
